CCTV Survey or Dye Testing: Which Is Right?

A drainage problem is not always visible where it starts. Water may appear in a garden, basement, car park or neighbouring property, while the actual fault sits further along the pipework. The choice between a CCTV survey or dye testing depends on the question that needs answering: do you need to inspect the condition of a drain, or trace where water is travelling?

Both methods are valuable diagnostic tools, but they do different jobs. Choosing the right one first can reduce disruption, avoid unnecessary excavation and give property owners, facilities teams and contractors clearer evidence for the next stage of work.

CCTV Survey or Dye Testing: Start With the Fault

A CCTV drainage survey uses a specialist camera to inspect the inside of underground pipes. It shows the physical condition of the drain, including blockages, cracks, displaced joints, root ingress, scale build-up, collapsed sections and incorrect connections.

Dye testing is used to track the route of water. A non-toxic coloured dye is introduced into a gully, toilet, sink, rainwater pipe or other drainage point. Engineers then monitor nearby outlets, chambers, watercourses or areas of concern to see where the coloured water emerges.

Put simply, CCTV answers, “What is happening inside this pipe?” Dye testing answers, “Where does water from this point go?” In some cases, one test gives a clear answer. In others, the most reliable diagnosis comes from using both in sequence.

When a CCTV Drainage Survey Is the Better Option

A CCTV survey is normally the first choice when there is a suspected defect or recurring drainage issue. If a toilet repeatedly backs up, an outside drain blocks after cleaning, foul smells return, or a surface area is sinking, the condition of the pipe needs to be seen rather than guessed.

The camera is fed through the drainage system by a qualified engineer and records the internal condition of the line. This allows the issue to be pinpointed with far more accuracy than digging based on surface symptoms. The footage can show whether cleaning is likely to solve the problem or whether the drain requires repair, relining or replacement.

Faults a CCTV survey can identify

CCTV inspections are particularly useful for locating structural and operational faults. These include cracked or fractured pipes, open or displaced joints, root penetration, defective connections, trapped debris, grease build-up and sections of pipe that have lost their correct fall.

For homeowners, this is often the most sensible route where there are repeated blockages or concerns before a property purchase. For commercial premises, it can support planned maintenance and help prevent disruption to tenants, customers or staff. On construction sites, a pre-works or post-works CCTV survey can confirm the condition and layout of existing drainage before new connections or surfacing works take place.

A good survey should provide usable findings, not simply footage. Engineers should be able to explain what has been found, where it is located, how serious it is and what practical repair options are available.

When Dye Testing Is the Better Option

Dye testing is best suited to suspected misconnections, leaks, cross-connections and unexplained water movement. It is commonly used where the source of contamination or flooding is unclear.

For example, rainwater should usually flow to the surface water system, while wastewater from toilets, sinks, kitchens and washing facilities should enter the foul drainage system. If those systems are wrongly connected, contaminated water may discharge into a watercourse or surface water network. A dye test can help establish whether a particular appliance, gully or downpipe is connected to the correct outlet.

It can also be useful when investigating water ingress. If water is entering a basement or appearing around a building after rainfall, engineers can add dye to selected gullies or rainwater pipes and observe whether it appears at the affected location. This provides evidence without immediately opening up floors, walls or external ground.

Where dye testing has limits

Dye testing does not show the internal condition of a pipe. Coloured water reaching an inspection chamber may prove that two points are connected, but it will not tell you whether the pipe is cracked, root-damaged, partially collapsed or poorly graded.

The test can also be affected by heavy rainfall, large or complex drainage networks, standing water and inaccessible chambers. In these situations, the engineer may need to test one section at a time or combine dye testing with a CCTV survey to reach a dependable conclusion.

CCTV Survey or Dye Testing for Common Drainage Problems

For a recurring blockage, CCTV is usually the right starting point. The issue may be caused by roots, a broken pipe, scale or a localised collapse. Dye alone cannot identify that defect.

For a suspected misconnected washing machine, sink or rainwater pipe, dye testing is usually more direct. The coloured dye can show whether water is reaching the foul or surface water system as intended.

For damp or flooding where the source is uncertain, it depends on the evidence. If the problem follows heavy rain, dye testing of rainwater drainage may identify the route water is taking. If there are signs of a broken underground drain, such as subsidence, foul odours or repeated blockages, CCTV inspection should be considered first.

For a property purchase, a CCTV drainage survey is generally more useful because it assesses the state of the drains and highlights defects that may lead to future cost. Dye testing may be added where there is a particular concern about drainage routes, shared systems or possible misconnections.

For commercial and construction projects, the decision often comes down to the information required for compliance, design or repair planning. CCTV provides condition evidence and pipe location detail. Dye testing helps verify connections and flow routes. Both can be important before handover, alterations or major drainage works.

Why Both Tests May Be Needed

Drainage faults are not always limited to one issue. A property could have a misconnected rainwater pipe and a cracked foul drain. It may have a water ingress problem caused by a defective gully connection, with a downstream pipe that also needs repair.

In these cases, starting with the most likely cause keeps the investigation efficient. Dye testing may establish that water from a particular gully is reaching an area where it should not be. A CCTV survey can then inspect the pipe route and reveal whether the problem is a wrong connection, failed joint or damaged section of drain.

This approach is especially useful on larger sites, where several drainage systems may run beneath buildings, yards, car parks and access roads. Accurate diagnosis helps avoid unnecessary excavation and allows repairs to be targeted at the actual defect.

What to Expect From a Professional Investigation

Before testing begins, the engineer should ask about the symptoms, when they occur and any recent drainage work, building alterations or weather-related events. Access points such as manholes, rodding eyes and gullies will be checked to establish the likely drainage route.

For CCTV work, the drain may need cleaning first if it is heavily blocked or full of debris. A clear pipe allows the camera to capture reliable footage. For dye testing, the engineer will select the appropriate drainage point, introduce the dye and monitor relevant chambers or outlets.

The final recommendation should be proportionate to the findings. Some problems require only drain cleaning or a small repair. Others may call for excavation, pipe relining, replacement or corrective works to separate foul and surface water systems. Clear evidence means the decision can be made with confidence rather than assumption.

Choose the Test That Gives You an Answer

There is no benefit in paying for a test that cannot answer the problem in front of you. If you need to see pipe damage, a CCTV drainage survey is the practical choice. If you need to establish where water is flowing, dye testing can provide the evidence. Where symptoms point to both a routeing issue and a structural defect, a combined investigation may be the most cost-effective option.
